Map of Pre-Roman Britain 55 BC-AD 10Tribe of the Cornovii

The Cornovii had no obvious tribal centre, inhabiting Shropshire and extending into Staffordshire, Cheshire, Clwyd, and the eastern part of Powys. There were many hill forts, though the cultural affinities of the people remain uncertain. By Roman times, the centre was adjacent to the hill fort of the Wrekin and seems to derive its name from it, although this cannot be taken as conclusive that this was an actual tribal capital.

(Additional information taken from The Oxford History of England: Roman Britain, Peter Salway.)

c.AD 43-44

The Cornovii seem to welcome the Romans, perhaps as an antidote to the powerful Catuvellauni menace on their eastern border.

c.51

The Romans subdue most of Wales with the defeat of High King Caratacus.

By the time Roman authority has faded in the fifth century, the former Cornovii territory has been absorbed by the Pagensis, Powys.
