Torelli Stefano's Allegory of Catherine the Great's Victory over the Turks and Tatars |
Painted in 1772, this oil on canvas combines images of concrete historical personages with figures from the artists' free-flying imagination - the painting was commissioned to glorify the victory of the Russian army in the first Russo-Turkish War (1768-1774) and Catherine the Great is portrayed as the goddess Minerva in a triumphal chariot. |
