Duchy of Poland (Piast)
AD 960 - 1025
Records seem to conflict with regard to the
creation of the Polish kingdom. Bloeslaw the Brave and his son are sometimes
held to be mere dukes, with Casimir the Restorer the kingdom's founder,
possibly (uncertainly) in 1038.

On 7 to 15 March the Congress Of Gniezno (the contemporary capital of

III establishes an archbishopric in Gniezno with three new bishoprics in
Cracow for Little Poland, Wroclaw for Silesia, and Kolobrzeg for Pomerania,
plus the reaffirmation of the old bishopric in Poznan. |
1002 |
Upon Otto III's death,
Bloeslaw takes over Lusatia and the March of Meissen, border territory
between Poland and
Thuringia. |
1003 - 1004 |
Bloeslaw becomes duke of Bohemia
(although this conflicts with the Bohemian list of rulers). The title brings
with it Moravia and Slovakia. |
1018 |
A peace treaty is signed in Budziszyn with emperor Heinrich II (Henry II the
Saint) - ratifying Poland's control over Lusatia and Meissen. In the same
year, Germany and Hungary
support an expedition against Russia.
Boleslaw defeats Kiev and takes over 'Grody
Czerwieńskie'. |
1025 |
Boleslaw I the Great is crowned on 18 April in Gniezno (with the Pope's
blessing), and Poland is elevated to a kingdom. |
