In the 1970s, John De Cleene began compiling data on worldwide historical states, tribes, and groups. His research took much the same lines as that of the early History Files, keeping files on individual states and kingdoms, researching their rise and fall, and all the major events in between. The research is properly cited throughout, even though the files were only ever intended for personal use. They have never had an online presence. As of 2022 the collection stood at an impressive 11,511 files, all in WordPerfect format. The files are not organised by region or country in the way of the History Files. They are strictly alphabetical. In addition to all those documents, the archive also contained three or four thousand picture files, divided into four categories: flags, maps, history, and statesmen. Having already begun a search for a suitable way of preserving the work, Mr De Cleene turned to the History Files. He had regularly visited the site over the years, and had been generous in donating to one of the infrequent fund-raising drives, the 2018 event which helped to secure the site an SSL security certificate. In November 2022, Mr De Cleene transferred his entire collection of historical data into the care of the History Files. The site is ongoing in its work to integrate the information into any new and upgraded pages where this may be possible. The detailed citations are being added to the sources for each page, and directly referenced in the text where possible. The banner, above, is a handy way of showing Mr De Cleene's contribution to any page on the site where that contribution has been significant.
