Map of 'Northern & Southern Dynasties' China AD 460 |
The 'Northern & Southern Dynasties' period of Chinese history emerged as a direct result of the preceding 'Sixteen Kingdoms of the Five Barbarians'. The Eastern Jin had survived the fall of the north by withdrawing to the south and east of the former empire. The north fractured into an ever-shifting mosaic of states and borders until, eventually, the Northern Wei emerged as the single dominant force. China was now clearly divided into two halves, and one major victory in battle could be the decisive act in reforming a single Chinese imperial state.
