Nawar's pottery |
Pottery changes over time allowed researchers to develop a timeline for the expansion of the city. They helped to contradict the impression given by early written texts that the earliest cities typically emerged under the strict control of kings who liked to keep their people as close as possible. Instead Nawar emerged as a result of the central site and several neighbouring villages all expanding into one another so that they eventually became indivisible.
