Dome Church, Toomemägi, Tartu (Photo 2 of 4) |
Tartu Cathedral, otherwise known as the Dome Church, is located on the picturesque green Dome Hill (Toomemägi in Estonian). The cathedral building remains one of the largest churches in Estonia. It is also the only medieval church with two spires in Estonia. A stone fortress was constructed on the hill in 1234 to replace the old Unguenois stronghold which dated back to the seventh century, although it had been rebuilt several times. Construction of the church started later in the thirteenth century, and was fully completed by the beginning of the sixteenth century. The spires were the last parts to be finished. The functioning cathedral building was rendered unusable by the Livonian Wars. |
