Tell Barsnip/Tell Ahmar |
This view shows the site of Tell Ahmar - the ancient stronghold or settlement of Barsib or Till-Barsip (spelling is variable) - from above the River Euphrates in the 1990s, although today part of the site is under water while the rest is still being explored by archaeologists. Assyria's King Shalmaneser III captured the city in 856 BC and renamed it Kar-Shulmanu-Ashared. After that it remained a provincial capital of the Assyrian empire for some two hundred and fifty years. |
