Map of Scandinavia AD 1300 |
In the middle of the thirteenth century the Swedes had seized control of the southern Finns who were now organised into a duchy called Österland. The Swedish kingdom was also extending its influence further northwards, while the Norwegians had taken full control of the southern interior of their kingdom. To the east, the power of Novgorod was fast fading as Moscow became a more important centre for the early Russians, while the Lithuanians had managed to hold off the attentions of the otherwise dominant German crusaders in the Baltics.
