Map of Scandinavia AD 814 |
Swedish interest in and exploration into the Slavic lands to the east of the Baltic was gradually building up, with an ethnic Finn named Rurik of Novgorod soon to found the grand principality of Kyiv. Swedish and Kvenish integration into the uncharted region to the north known generally as Kvenland had only just begun by this time. In the south, the Swedes were beginning to show signs of dominance while the Kvens were just one of a number of inhabitants of the southern areas of Kvenland. Many other tribes which also eventually became Finnish included the Tavastians (in modern southern-central Finland), Karelians (Balto-Finns on the modern Finno-Russian border), and Savonians (a sub-grouping of Karelians and Tavastians in modern eastern-central Finland).
