Tallinn city walls (Photo 2 of 7) |
The oldest sections of Tallinn's city wall were built by the Danes in the thirteenth century. During the next three hundred years it became one of the largest and strongest defence systems in the entirety of Northern Europe. More than half of the magnificent defence system has been preserved as a city wall, and this includes 1.85km of the wall itself, twenty-six defence towers, two gates, and fragments of two front gates. Patkuli viewing platform is a good place from which to examine the city wall, and a number of towers are open for visitors. Visitors also have the opportunity to walk on a small section of the wall which connects the Nunne, Sauna, and Kuldjala towers. From just about all of its accessible positions the wall has wonderful views of Tallinn's Old Town and Toompea. |
