Map of Scandinavia c.AD 100 |
It was Rome's attempted advance into the forests of southern and West Germanic lands across the Rhine which led to intensified internecine battles farther north. One notable example took place in Denmark around this time. It could have been this which forced the Heruli to migrate south around the same time. The location of the Anglii, on the other hand, is anything but certain, with the Eastern Baltic being a possibility rather than the Cimbric peninsula which they would reach within a century or so (as shown on this map). Much of Scandinavia is still unknown territory to those Germanic tribes which will eventually become Norse, Swedes, and Danes.
