Whether you're fascinated by British history or you have an interest in Africa's past, there are an array of video games that can provide further education. In fact, you can experience digital time travel and explore the historical periods you're keen to learn more about, but in a virtual environment where fun and entertainment are also on offer.

Throughout the history of gaming, we've been exposed to thousands of games that have been inspired by different types of history, be it medieval history, political history, ancient history, and so much more. For people with an interest in this particular area, these historical journeys are hard to beat.

For history buffs, the options are arguably even better today, though. Graphics are better, gameplay has drastically improved, and there are even virtual reality headsets to experience. So, without further ado, below is a look at a selection of top video games for history lovers.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a superb Western

Although you could also play the first instalment of the game, Red Dead Redemption 2 is arguably the better of the two. In the game, players take on the role of Arthur Morgan, a likable outlaw who is aiming to complete a variety of missions in America's Wild West. The setting is as accurate as you can imagine; you're riding around on a horse, and there are gunfights and poker games that are synonymous with that particular period. If you're interested in cowboys and the Wild West, then you'll undoubtedly enjoy Red Dead Redemption 2.

Offering crisp graphics and a truly engaging storyline, players have to guide Amicia and Hugo away from danger and into a safe zone. Along the way, there are bloody battles to overcome and bombs to avoid.

Also offering plenty of fun in a game that features animals and waterfalls, Aztec Clusters is a fantastic game to session.

Age of Empires IV is a strategy-based favourite
