East Devon Part 14: Churches of Exmouth

Community Church Exmouth, Exmouth, East Devon, Devon

The recently-new building which houses the Community Church Exmouth is on the northern side of Market Street, just twenty-five metres to the east of the junction with Rolle Street. This church is one of a wave of post-war arrivals which focus on open, family-centred worship. The name is conveniently abbreviated as CCE, and was formerly the Ichthus Community Church. It is an independent evangelical charismatic church, part of the 'Salt and Light Network of Churches'.

St Saviour's Mission Church and Open Door Centre, Exmouth, East Devon, Devon

St Saviour's Mission Church stood at the south-east corner of Church Street and South Street in Exmouth. It was initially a mission room, before becoming a dedicated church. Built in 1881-1882, it was a red-brick structure with a chancel, nave, and west turret with one bell. It was enlarged in 1888 when the north aisle was added. It is now the Open Door Centre, St Saviour's House, in a new building which is also home to Exmouth Quakers since 4 September 2011.

Tower Street Methodist Church, Exmouth, East Devon, Devon

Tower Street Methodist Church faces north-east on Tower Street's north flank, looking out over Queen Street which arcs around its own north side. Wesleyan Methodists arrived in Exmouth in 1808, meeting in houses and shops around town. The first chapel was built at 'The Parade' (see 'related links'). Around the same time the Primitive Methodists arrived, taking over the parade when Christ Church opened. In 1897 the Wesleyans moved again, to this Gothic building.

Victoria Road Baptist Chapel, Exmouth, East Devon, Devon

Victoria Road Baptist Chapel was here on Victoria Road's northern side, about midway between the Manchester Street and Imperial Road junctions. Erected in 1901, the Gothic stone building held three hundred. It possibly closed, as a new Exmouth Baptist Church started in 1964-1965, the site being purchased for a nominal fee for a new building. Around 2019 Exeter's Riverside Church (see links) added a branch here which meets as Brixington (Free) Community Church.

St Andrew's Church, Exmouth, East Devon, Devon

The former St Andrew's Church is at the north-western corner of the junction between Victoria Road and Morton Crescent Mews. Erected in 1896 on a site which was donated by the Honourable Mark G K Rolle, it was built in stone and Ted brick, in the Early English style based on designs by Paul & Cogswell, London architects. It consists of a chancel, nave, aisles, south chapel, vestries, and central bell turret, and sat five hundred. It is now a hostel for the homeless.

Beacon Congregational Church, Exmouth, East Devon, Devon

The former Beacon Congregational Church stands at the south-eastern corner of Beacon Place and Little Bicton Place in Exmouth. The original Congregational chapel here was built in 1807, but this was replaced in 1893 by the present building. This brick edifice was constructed with Bath stone dressings on what was then referred to as Chapel Hill. It could seat three hundred and fifty persons, but falling demand saw it being sold for repurposing as apartments.
