Caradon Part 21: Churches of Trevelmond to St Keyne

Trevelmond (Second) Wesleyan Chapel, Trevelmond, Cornwall

Trevelmond (Second) Wesleyan Chapel sits in the centre of the village of the same name, not more than half a kilometre away from the site of the first Wesleyan chapel (see 'related links'). The chapel is on the eastern side of the eastern-central side of the village, set back from the road. It was built in 1896, a Wesleyan Methodist chapel with an integral vestry in a three-dimensional Gothic style. It remained in a well-kept and well-maintained condition into 2024.

Trevelmond Methodist Church, Trevelmond, Cornwall

Initially, as stated above, a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, at the Methodist union of 1932 it was rechristened as Trevelmond Methodist Church. It has already celebrated centenary and and one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversaries in that format and, in 2024 appeared still be open. The Sunday school building which is shown in this photo can be seen further down the road, positioned at the south-eastern corner of the Methodist church grounds on the Bosent road.

Dobwalls Bible Christian Chapel, Dobwalls, Cornwall

Dobwalls Bible Christian Chapel to the north-east of Trevelmond is on the south side of the main road into town from the Twelvewoods roundabout, at the junction with Chestnut Drive in the Beneathway area. It was built possibly in the 1860s with a Sunday school and was later United Methodist (1907), then Methodist (1932). It closed in 1934, being sold in 1935 to become a 1930s-themed museum of Egyptian treasures before becoming residential after 2008.

St Peter's Church, Dobwalls, Cornwall

The former St Peter's Church is on the north side of the main road, with Havett Close directly behind it. This Grade 2 listed chapel-of-ease for Liskeard was built in 1839. It is a building of stone in the Early English style, one which consists of a chancel and nave, and a turret which contains a single bell. It has a churchyard but, following a period of abandonment, it has recently been converted into a private residence. Its congregation merged with the Methodists (below).

Dobwalls Wesleyan Methodist Chapel / St Peter's United Church, Dobwalls, Cornwall

Dobwalls Wesleyan Methodist Chapel sits further to the west, twenty metres to the east of the Havett Road junction. The original chapel was built in 1836, but that was replaced in 1859 by the present Henry Rice building. The schoolroom was added in 1889. The chapel became Dobwalls Methodist Church in 1932. When St Peter's (above) was closed that congregation merged with this one to form - from 2009 - St Peter's United Church which remained open into 2026.

St Keyne Wesleyan Reform Union Chapel / Zion Chapel / St Keyne United Methodist Chapel, St Keyne, Cornwall

St Keyne Wesleyan Reform Union Chapel, some way to the south-east of Dobwells, is at the south-east corner of the junction with the lane to Lametton. It sits next door to a cottage which may have been an earlier meeting house. It was built in 1861 as Zion Chapel and was remodelled in 1926. Later St Keyne United Methodist Chapel it closed in 1932 (likely due to the Methodist union) and went on to house a bakery. Now is it a converted house called 'The Old Bakery'.
