A shift in what historical research looks like

Digital tools haven't replaced academic research in history; they've changed it.

Historians must analyze evidence in detail and construct arguments about causation. What has changed is the environment. Students today can find materials in an afternoon that once took months to gather. They can use digital tools to analyze documents that were hard to read before. Future historians can switch between close reading and computational methods with little effort. They will navigate both physical archives and digital tools.
